Two popular roofing materials that use this process of binding two or more dissimilar metals are referred to as galvanized and galvalume each of which use steel as the base metal. Galvalume and galvanized steel roofing are affected differently by corrosion. The mixture of zinc and aluminum protects the galvalume metal against corrosion and rust helping galvalume typically last much longer than galvanized steel. Galvalume is more corrosion resistant than galvanized steel but because aluminum provides barrier protection instead of galvanic protection scratches and cut edges are less protected.

Most galvalume metal roofs come with a 25 year warranty if the metal roofing manufacturer is using galvalume with a full az55 coating. Galvanized while both products were developed to essentially sacrifice themselves to protect the steel sheeting they coat the above exposure comparison shows that galvalume performs up to nine times better in fighting corrosion as compared to galvanized coating. Aluminum has tremendous corrosion resistance so it will generally corrode more slowly than galvanized steel. This is known as a galvanized metal.

Iron or steel can be coated with zinc. The zinc acts as a protective layer to iron or steel to prevent rust. Galvalume metal roof and siding panels are coated with a mixture of zinc and aluminum and siliconized coating to help resist scuffs and fingerprints better than a bare metal product. Before the introduction of galvalume to the metal roofing industry in the late 20th century using galvanized sheet and coil was a common practice.

From galvanized steel roofing to galvalume metal roofs both finishes reinforce metal s strength performance and increase its longevity. Typically galvanized sheet roofs are used mainly for agricultural buildings where rust is less of an issue and costs must be kept low. For these reasons galvalume metal roofs are much more popular. The one exception is when the coating is penetrated scratched or chipped by falling or blowing debris for example.
